N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) is a supplement and medicine derived from the amino acid cysteine. Among the most important properties of NAC we find that it is:
- Antioxidant: Stimulates the synthesis of glutathione , one of the most powerful endogenous antioxidants in our body.
- Anti-inflammatory: Reduces the formation of proinflammatory molecules and has vasodilatory properties that help the regeneration of the endothelium, mitigating inflammation.
- Mucolytic: It acts by decreasing the viscosity of mucus , promoting expectoration and protecting the respiratory system.
Benefits of NAC
In addition, this supplement has a variety of benefits and applications. Here are some of the main benefits of NAC:
- Powerful Antioxidant: NAC helps replenish glutathione levels , which as we have discussed, is one of the most powerful antioxidants in the body. One of the main functions of glutathione is to protect cells from oxidative damage.
- Liver Detox: NAC is used in the treatment of paracetamol (acetaminophen) overdose, helping to prevent liver damage .
- Respiratory Support: Acts as a mucolytic , meaning it helps to break up and loosen mucus in the lungs, making it easier to expel . It can be beneficial for people with chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD, bronchitis, and cystic fibrosis.
- Mental Health: Some studies suggest that NAC may help in the treatment of psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This is because NAC influences glutamate and dopamine levels in the brain.
- Cardiovascular Health: May help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the arteries , which may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Immune Support: By improving glutathione levels in the body, NAC can help strengthen the immune system, improving the body's ability to fight infections and diseases . Additionally, if NAC is consumed in conjunction with Vitamin C, the benefits of both are enhanced.
- Brain Health: Its potential to improve cognition and brain function has been studied, especially in the context of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
- Heavy Metal Detoxification: Helps eliminate heavy metals from the body by acting as a chelator.
- Improved Fertility: Some studies indicate that NAC may improve fertility in men by increasing sperm quality and reducing oxidative damage to sperm cells.
- Reducing Kidney Damage: May protect the kidneys from damage caused by medications or toxic substances .
NAC and Glycine
Glycine is a non-essential amino acid that is involved in many processes in the body such as protein synthesis, glutathione synthesis or as a neurotransmitter. But when we combine glycine with NAC, the benefits of both are increased. Let's look at some of these benefits:
Increased Glutathione :
Both glycine and NAC are precursors to glutathione. Glutathione is responsible for protecting cells from oxidative damage and is vital for the immune system. The combination of glycine and NAC optimizes glutathione production which can improve the body's ability to detoxify and protect against various diseases.
Improved Mitochondrial Functions and Energy :
Helps Eliminate Damaged Mitochondria (Mitophagy) :
Reducing Inflammation :
Better Nutrient Absorption :
Improved Endothelial Function:
Contribution to Genetic Health :
Supporting Stem Cell Health :
Reduction of Cellular Aging (Senescence) :
Reduction of Oxidative Stress :
More Energy :
Waist Circumference Reduction :
Improved Blood Pressure:
Muscle Gain :
How to take NAC?
- Maintenance NAC to enhance glutathione production and assist with nocturnal liver detoxification: 1 gram in the evening on an empty stomach.
- As a mucolytic and to improve respiratory function , the same dose .
- For the immune system, you can use 3 to 9 grams in different doses. If you take it on an empty stomach, it is better, but if you feel sick after eating.
