NAC: Discover All the Properties of this Amino Acid and How to Enhance It Even More

July 10, 2024Juan Torrontegui

N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) is a supplement and medicine derived from the amino acid cysteine. Among the most important properties of NAC we find that it is:

  1. Antioxidant: Stimulates the synthesis of glutathione , one of the most powerful endogenous antioxidants in our body.
  2. Anti-inflammatory: Reduces the formation of proinflammatory molecules and has vasodilatory properties that help the regeneration of the endothelium, mitigating inflammation.
  3. Mucolytic: It acts by decreasing the viscosity of mucus , promoting expectoration and protecting the respiratory system.

Benefits of NAC

In addition, this supplement has a variety of benefits and applications. Here are some of the main benefits of NAC:

  1. Powerful Antioxidant: NAC helps replenish glutathione levels , which as we have discussed, is one of the most powerful antioxidants in the body. One of the main functions of glutathione is to protect cells from oxidative damage.
  2. Liver Detox: NAC is used in the treatment of paracetamol (acetaminophen) overdose, helping to prevent liver damage .
  3. Respiratory Support: Acts as a mucolytic , meaning it helps to break up and loosen mucus in the lungs, making it easier to expel . It can be beneficial for people with chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD, bronchitis, and cystic fibrosis.
  4. Mental Health: Some studies suggest that NAC may help in the treatment of psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This is because NAC influences glutamate and dopamine levels in the brain.
  5. Cardiovascular Health: May help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the arteries , which may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.
  6. Immune Support: By improving glutathione levels in the body, NAC can help strengthen the immune system, improving the body's ability to fight infections and diseases . Additionally, if NAC is consumed in conjunction with Vitamin C, the benefits of both are enhanced.
  7. Brain Health: Its potential to improve cognition and brain function has been studied, especially in the context of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
  8. Heavy Metal Detoxification: Helps eliminate heavy metals from the body by acting as a chelator.
  9. Improved Fertility: Some studies indicate that NAC may improve fertility in men by increasing sperm quality and reducing oxidative damage to sperm cells.
  10. Reducing Kidney Damage: May protect the kidneys from damage caused by medications or toxic substances .

NAC and Glycine

Glycine is a non-essential amino acid that is involved in many processes in the body such as protein synthesis, glutathione synthesis or as a neurotransmitter. But when we combine glycine with NAC, the benefits of both are increased. Let's look at some of these benefits:

Increased Glutathione :

Both glycine and NAC are precursors to glutathione. Glutathione is responsible for protecting cells from oxidative damage and is vital for the immune system. The combination of glycine and NAC optimizes glutathione production which can improve the body's ability to detoxify and protect against various diseases.

Improved Mitochondrial Functions and Energy :

Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, responsible for producing ATP, the primary source of cellular energy. Glycine and NAC improve mitochondrial function by reducing oxidative damage and improving the energy efficiency of cells. This results in increased energy production, which can improve vitality and reduce fatigue.

Helps Eliminate Damaged Mitochondria (Mitophagy) :

Mitophagy is the process of removing damaged mitochondria to maintain the quality and efficiency of the mitochondrial pool. GlyNAC promotes mitophagy, helping to remove dysfunctional mitochondria and allowing the regeneration of new, healthy mitochondria, which is crucial for cellular health and the prevention of age-related diseases.

Reducing Inflammation :

Chronic inflammation is associated with various diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and autoimmune disorders. The combination of glycine and NAC has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce inflammatory markers in the body, contributing to the prevention and management of chronic diseases.

Better Nutrient Absorption :

Insulin resistance and other metabolic problems can affect nutrient absorption. GlyNAC improves insulin sensitivity and nutrient absorption, optimizing metabolism and helping the body better utilize the food consumed.

Improved Endothelial Function:

Endothelial function is crucial for cardiovascular health, as endothelial cells line blood vessels and regulate vasodilation and blood flow. GlyNAC improves endothelial function, which may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and improve blood circulation.

Contribution to Genetic Health :

Genomic health refers to the integrity and stability of genetic material in cells. Glycine and NAC protect DNA from oxidative damage and enhance DNA repair, contributing to genomic health and reducing the risk of mutations that can lead to diseases such as cancer.

Supporting Stem Cell Health :

Stem cells are essential for tissue regeneration and repair in the body. GlyNAC supports stem cell health and function, improving the body’s ability to regenerate damaged tissue and maintain overall health as we age.

Reduction of Cellular Aging (Senescence) :

Cellular senescence is the process by which cells stop dividing and age, contributing to the overall aging of the body. The combination of glycine and NAC reduces cellular senescence, helping to maintain the youthfulness and functionality of cells.

Reduction of Oxidative Stress :

Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body's ability to neutralize them. GlyNAC decreases oxidative stress, protecting cells and tissues from damage caused by free radicals.

More Energy :

Adequate cellular energy is crucial for optimal body function. The combination of glycine and NAC enhances energy production at the cellular level, increasing energy levels and reducing fatigue.

Waist Circumference Reduction :

A high waist circumference is associated with an increased risk of metabolic diseases. GlyNAC may help reduce waist size by improving metabolism and reducing abdominal fat, contributing to better metabolic health.

Improved Blood Pressure:

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The combination of glycine and NAC improves blood pressure by enhancing endothelial function and reducing inflammation, which may reduce the risk of hypertension and heart disease.

Muscle Gain :

Muscle health is essential for mobility and quality of life, especially in older people. GlyNAC may help improve muscle mass and strength by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, and by improving nutrient absorption and energy production.

How to take NAC?

  • Maintenance NAC to enhance glutathione production and assist with nocturnal liver detoxification: 1 gram in the evening on an empty stomach.
  • As a mucolytic and to improve respiratory function , the same dose .
  • For the immune system, you can use 3 to 9 grams in different doses. If you take it on an empty stomach, it is better, but if you feel sick after eating.
