Surely you know how important it is to drink clean and pure water. I always repeat to my patients that the quality of the water is more important than what we eat, because we are 70% water. If the water you drink is not of quality, sooner or later your body will give you a warning. And if you drink quality water, I congratulate you. But you need to know that the water from your shower can be between 10 and 20 times more toxic than the water you drink, and it is important that you avoid this route of contamination.
Some time ago I explained to you in this article that taking a bath in chlorinated water is worse than drinking it because you absorb the chlorine directly through your skin. If you didn't know, chlorine is carcinogenic and we must avoid it to avoid contamination.
The vast majority of people are not aware that every time they shower they are absorbing chlorine through water and that can cause different problems in our body such as skin irritation, dermatitis, eczema, itchy eyes, hair loss, acidosis... among other things.. I would like to let you know the best solution that I know and that I myself use to avoid chlorine in your shower.
The problem with chlorine is not just its smell or that it dries your hair or skin, but the effect it has on your water supply when it combines with organic matter. When chlorine comes into contact with this organic matter, what is known as disinfection byproducts (DBP) are formed.
And these DBPs are much more toxic than chlorine itself. Furthermore, DBPs are responsible for the vast majority of the toxic effects of chlorinated water. \n \nAccording to some studies, the toxicity of DBPs is up to 1000 times the toxicity of the effects of chlorine alone. This is why it is good that you pay more attention to the SPDs that are in your water. \n \nWhy are SPDs so Dangerous?
One of the most common disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formed by a reaction between chlorine and organic matter is trihalomethanes (THMs). These THMs are classified as group B carcinogens.
For years, researchers have believed that the danger of disinfection byproducts (DBP) occurred only when chlorine was swallowed. But the most current studies show that drinking the water is not the only problem, and it is probably not the most serious either.
Here is some information so that you understand the importance of taking into account the quality of the water in your shower:
- On average, you drink approximately 2 to 3 liters of water a day… but in about 5 minutes you are exposed to 95 liters of water when you shower.
- The steam that is inhaled during a shower contains up to 20 times the concentration of chlorine than tap water.
- You can easily absorb as many toxins in a bath as you would by drinking tap water for an entire week.
- According to studies, after a 10-minute bath in chlorinated water, your blood levels of THMs (a common disinfection byproduct – SPD) can increase by a staggering 700%.
In conclusion, chlorine and its byproducts are an invisible danger lurking in virtually every shower. And the risks to your health far exceed those of drinking tap water. Now you know why filtering your shower water is even more important than purifying just the water you drink.
How Do Toxins Enter Your Body?
You may have wondered how chlorinated water doesn't simply bounce off your body and go down the drain. The problem with a hot, steamy bath is this:
- It allows your pores to open, which leads to…
- Maximize the level of absorption of chlorine and other chemicals directly into your body and…
- It helps create a “clear path” for outside chemicals to enter your body fluids and bloodstream – (unlike tap water, where the digestive process has a chance to filter out some of the harmful contaminants.)
- According to studies, after a 10-minute bath in chlorinated water, your blood levels of THMs (a common disinfection byproduct – SPD) can increase by a staggering 700%.
The other problem with a hot bath, which most people don't think about, is that with the steam comes… inhalation. Your Bathroom is a Hotbed of Dangerous Chemical Vapors:
- It forms very quickly in the environment with heat and steam. Between 70% and 90% of the chemicals in bath water evaporate before the water reaches the ground.
- Your lungs inhale them in high concentrations and they are absorbed through the skin, which causes them to go directly to your bloodstream.
- They have a greater effect compared to drinking tap water, since there is nothing to filter them.
This is the sad truth about how chlorine and other potentially harmful chemicals in your bath water can easily end up in your body.
But…what are the possible consequences of inhaling and absorbing chlorine and other chemicals into your body?
Potential Health Risks of Unprotected Showering
- The American Journal of Public Health – Links the absorption and inhalation of chlorine to increased risks of skin irritation.
- The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — Chlorine, converted into vapor, becomes gaseous chloroform. Chloroform can be a strong respiratory irritant and may cause fatigue
In short, absorbing or inhaling chlorine DBPs can cause…
- Weakening of the immune system
- Damage to the central nervous system
- Harmful effects on the cardiac system
- Poor kidney system function
- Harmful impacts on your respiratory system.
And these are just some of the potential risks you face when using chlorinated water…
About 10 or 20 years ago, there wasn't much information about the negative effects of chlorine and DBPs. At that time, most people were satisfied with having water to drink that posed no risk of waterborne diseases.
Obviously, things have evolved in this time, and today, we are allowed to have more information about the effects of chlorine, and the chemicals in water.
So, the best option is to find ways to limit those toxic chemicals, DBPs and also volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
The incredible thing is that technology has currently evolved enough to give you effective and practical solutions to filter toxins. \n \nThere are many options available on the market to filter water, but let's see which one is the best. Requirements for the Best Filter.
These are some of the requirements that every shower filter must:
- Filter the greatest amount of chlorine – After all the information presented, this has to be essential. You need to remove at least 90% (or more) of the chlorine. This filter removes 99% of chlorine.
- Have several filtration phases. The Alkanatur shower filter with its triple filtration is the most complete I have found:
- cotton phase
- Active carbon fiber phase with a patented system
- Phase with deoxidation particles
- Filter the vast majority of DBPs, particularly trihalomethanes (THMs) – As you well know, these byproducts can be more dangerous to your health than chlorine itself.
- Reduce other VOCs (volatile organic compounds) – These are pollutants, (of which DBPs are a part). Byproducts of paints, pharmaceutical drugs and petroleum fuels are just a few examples…
- Reduce other VOCs (Reduce heavy metals – Lead and copper need to be significantly reduced, as they can be absorbed through your skin during a steamy bath. Volatile organics) – These are pollutants, (of which DBPs are part). Byproducts of paints, pharmaceutical drugs and petroleum fuels are just a few examples…
- Use a multi-stage filtration system – A single-stage system would not be sufficient. The best system is one with multiple filtering devices.
- Use a filtration system – Provide a smooth flow of water – Your filtration system needs to be designed in such a way that it does not clog or affect the water pressure. Likewise, the shower head needs to have good pressure. Multi-stage filtering – A single-stage system would not be sufficient. The best system is one with multiple filtering devices.
- Easy installation- If you need more than 10 minutes to install it with special tools, then I wouldn't even consider it. The filter should be small enough to fit the vast majority of showers and heads while remaining at the same height as the current one.
- Beautiful design, and with practical maintenance - It is important that it has a good design and not that it becomes an eyesore in your bathroom. On the other hand, replacing the filter should be easy and quick, with a frequency of no less than six months.
- Be reasonably priced – The price should be reasonable and affordable to be able to install it even if you have several showers.
- Prove the manufacturer's commitment to quality – Even though it is at the end, it should be considered a high priority. A filtration system is only as good as the manufacturer behind it. It must have quality standards, certification levels and guarantees.
Advantages of the Alkanatur shower filter
- 100% free of calcium sulphite. Only filter on the market that does not contain the additive E226 (calcium sulfite). Its toxicity level is very high for health.
- Filter life: 30,000 liters
- Includes a chlorine reagent
- Prepared for different types of installation
- 30 days satisfaction guarantee
- Is it like bathing with natural spring water? – Patented 2-stage filter removes and reduces chlorine, SPDs (THMs), VOCs, heavy metals and other contaminants from water.
- It is easy to install – Installs in minutes without any special tools or plumbing complications. And, due to its design, it fits in the vast majority of showers and does not need to be adjusted to the height of the shower.
- Maintains free flow of water – With its unique design, it does not clog or impede water pressure.
- Reasonable price – One of my criteria was the difficult limit of less than €100 for a filter that met or exceeded all the selection requirements.
- Economical maintenance – Since the filter only needs to be changed twice a year and is reasonably priced, the usage price is less than €5 per month.
- Economical maintenanceHigh quality certificates – High levels of certification demonstrate the extraordinary quality of the manufacturer.ico – Since the filter only needs to be changed twice a year and is reasonably priced, the user price is less than €5 per month.
