What is melatonin?

\nMelatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland and is also produced in the digestive tract. This hormone is present in almost all human cells. As we grow, melatonin levels drop. \nIn childhood, our melatonin levels are the highest in life. With the hormonal changes of puberty, melatonin levels drop sharply. However, melatonin production is maintained during puberty. \n \nThe explanation is that since during this stage our body grows sharply, the concentration of melatonin in the blood circulation decreases; the same amount of melatonin must be distributed over a larger body. This discovery may explain the relationship that has been established between obesity and various pathological disorders such as heart disease. \n \nAs the body increases in size, the concentration of melatonin dilutes, leading to various degenerative diseases. This is why it is usually recommended after reaching maturity. \n
