N-acetylcysteine ​​or NAC is a drug with mucolytic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. NAC comes from the amino acid L-cysteine, amino acids being the basic components of proteins. N-acetylcysteine ​​is characterized by its antioxidant effectiveness. This molecule that allows the body to release free radicals.

Uses of NAC

  • People commonly use N-acetylcysteine ​​for coughs and other lung conditions . It is also used for the flu, dry eye, and many other conditions.
  • N-acetylcysteine ​​is an antioxidant , so it could play a role in cancer prevention.
  • N-acetylcysteine ​​(abbreviated as NAC) is a drug with mucolytic properties . Its mechanism of action makes mucous secretions less viscous, making their subsequent expulsion easier. Given this mucolytic effect proven for decades, it is used in the treatment of acute and chronic bronchial conditions.
  • It also activates the ciliated epithelium, promoting expectoration and is cytoprotective of the respiratory system .

What is the recommended dosage?

There is no recommended dose, although the dose of NAC used in clinical trials has ranged between 600 mg and 3000 mg per day divided into several doses. My recommendation is:

  • Maintenance dose: 3000 mg per day divided into three doses.
  • Shock dose: 9000 mg per day, divided into three doses.

When you should NOT take NAC

  • Should not be taken with nitroglycerin
  • Should not be taken with anticoagulants
  • If you are a person with bleeding disorders
  • If you are a person with Asthma
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
