L-Carnitine is an amino acid that can occur in two forms: D form and L-isomers. Only the L-isomeric form, i.e. L-Carnitine, is found in nature and is biologically effective. The body can synthesize or produce L-Carnitine internally or it can ingest it through the diet, mainly from foods of animal origin. This ingested carnitine is absorbed in the small intestine. Endogenous synthesis requires 6 other nutrients, including amino acids, vitamins and iron, and takes place in the liver and kidney.
